The 23 year old Iris Mittenaere, born in Lille, a town in North of France, is crowned Miss Universe 2016 and the second French beauty queen to win the title. This time around, host Steve Harvey redeemed himself by announcing the correct winner of the 65th Miss Universe! Yes, he bungled last year’s announcement of winner but we sincerely forgave you. Mittenaere bested Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier, first runner-up, and Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar, second runner-up.
The beauty queen is studying dentistry, campaigns for dental and oral hygiene, and advocates for access to education and children’s rights. Mittenaere was crowned on 30 January 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Looking back at history, France waited 64 years to bring back home the most glamorous and prestigious beauty pageant title in the world. In 1953, Christiane Martel became the first French to win the crown and the second Miss Universe title holder. In 1952, Armi Kuusela of Finland became the first Miss Universe title holder. The event was held in Long Beach, California.
